A Celebration of Robbie Burns with Blackthorn
Place des Arts · concert with haggis at intermission
Monday, January 25, 2027 · Robert Burns' 268th birthday
Every January, Scots and friends of Scotland around the world raise a glass to the poet Robert Burns (1759–1796) with a Burns Supper. Most suppers happen on the nearest weekend, so look from mid-January to early February.
A short four-line grace in Scots, often credited to Burns, opens the meal: some have meat and can't eat, some can eat but lack it, and we're thankful to have both.
Everyone stands as a piper leads the haggis to the top table. It's a savoury pudding of oatmeal, spices and lamb, and vegetarian versions are common now.
Someone performs Burns' poem to the haggis with plenty of drama, slicing it open at the line "an' cut you up wi' ready slight." Then there's a toast, usually with whisky.
Dinner comes with neeps and tatties (turnip and potato). Then come speeches: the Immortal Memory of Burns, a cheeky Toast to the Lassies, and the lassies' Reply.
The night ends with everyone in a circle, arms crossed and hands joined, singing Burns' Auld Lang Syne. Many suppers carry on with a ceilidh dance.
First time? Wear what you'd wear to a nice dinner. A kilt or a tartan scarf, tie or sash is welcome but never required. See what to wear.
